One Room Challenge - Design Plans

If you’re here for the first time, welcome! I’m Jana Bek, an interior designer with an emerging lifestyle line of home décortextiles, & lighting. I have a love for bright colors, bold prints, and designing spaces & home décor that help transport you to your dream destination.

I’m so excited to be participating in my fourth season of One Room Challenge, this go-around I’m making over our living room.

As I mentioned last week, my chief issue with the space is that it’s not inviting, secondly, it does not have any sort of cohesive design, #guilty. Today I’m sharing my plans to make the space inviting and easy on the eyes.

This sunroom designed by Lindsey Ellis Beatty is consistently my inspiration for the aesthetic I want to achieve, (especially for our living room), it’s gorgeous, filled with character, and incredibly inviting to boot!

The palette for our living rooms is blues & neutrals, with pops of blush pink. I want to layer in a lot of texture to make the space inviting as well.

Here’s my punch list for making the room more warm & beautiful:

Larger Rug

Comfier Side Chairs

Add window treatments

Replace Coffee Table with Ottoman

Paint room slightly darker & a warmer hue

Do something with TV cords/media stand, (clever DIY in mind here)

Update lighting fixture

I’ve got a LOT of decisions to make in the next few days but I have, for the most part, settled on my textiles as I believe are the foundation for a space. I’ve also chosen our comfy new chairs, here’s a mock-up of where I’m at now:

The textile mix will be our navy shagreen, brushstroke, & palm beach blooms fabric. I'm using the PB blooms for pillows & stools that LivenUpDesign is crafting – their pieces are so beautifully made! To incorporate pops of blush, I’m layering in these beauties from Arianna Belle.

I haven’t mentioned that this is an awkward sized space - it requires a larger rug but too large & it would block the French doors of our adjoining office. The width of the rug constrains the depth of the chairs we can fit on the rug. It's taken me a bit of time to find the biggest rug (with not being too big).

Enter the perfect 10’x14’ beachy bleached oak rug from Dash & Albert. I was looking for a luxurious jute rug that was very light in color, not warm red tones like our previous one, and I knew this rug would be the perfect fit. We just received it & it’s too good to be true – it’s already transformed the room, the space looks so much bigger & brighter! It's very soft underfoot too.

I’ve wanted bobbin chairs for the longest time & knew this space would be the perfect place for them. After much hunting for bobbin chairs that are large enough to be comfy but small enough to fit on our new rug, I finally found these petite bobbins from Front Gate. I love that the almost black wood of the chairs will anchor all of the lightness in the space.

Again, there are so many decisions to make & at the top of my list is what brushstroke color to go with for the window treatments – I love the blush but that would be my usual route and I want to mix it up a bit so I'm leaning towards the aqua

Which would you choose?!

I've got a bit more to go with bringing everything together

One Room Challenge - Week 1

If you’re here for the first time, welcome! I’m Jana Bek, an interior designer with an emerging lifestyle line of home décortextiles, & lighting. I have a love for bright colors, bold prints, and designing spaces & home décor that help transport you to your dream destination.

I’m so excited to be participating in my fourth season of One Room Challenge & and a huge thanks to Linda of Calling it Home for organizing it!

My husband & I split our time between Ann Arbor, MI & Atlanta, GA & last spring I designed our Atlanta apartment for ORC as a linking participant:

This go-around I’m making over our living room. Here is where it’s at now:

My chief issue with the space is that it’s not inviting. Over the years this room has become an amalgamation of random furniture & décor – the rug is too small, the coffee & side tables blend into the rug, those chairs (which I love) are not ones you would cuddle up in to read a book or watch a movie.

Note the cords behind the television, major eyesore!

So each Wednesday for the next 5 weeks I’ll be bringing warmth, color, and pattern to make this space cozy & cohesive. The couch & beach prints are the only items staying so it should be a total transformation!

Here’s a sneak peek at the color palette – blush pink + navy, tune in for more details next week! In the interim, you can find my scheming on Instagram & Pinterest
